Calling all aspiring and early-career designers!

Step into a bold design challenge to craft a limited-edition cover for Threads: My Life in Style, a memoir project that blends fashion and storytelling. The winner’s thoughtful approach and strong portfolio could shape the visual voice of a beautiful book. The winning designer will receive a £500 commission for their work, a special tea and tour of Paul Smith HQ in Covent Garden hosted by Sir Paul Smith, and a trip to Pan Macmillan offices to meet the publishing team and explore how cover design comes to life in book publishing. In addition, one copy of the limited-edition proof bearing the winning design will be signed by Sir Paul Smith and sent to the winner for keeps. The competition is open to UK residents aged 18 and over, with full eligibility criteria and terms and conditions set out on the competition page. Submissions should be a single PDF containing your full name, a concise 200-word statement explaining why you are the right designer for this commission, and a portfolio of 3 to 6 pieces that demonstrate range, craft, and an editorial sensibility. There is no entry fee. The closing time is 23:59 on Sunday 7 June 2026, and the shortlist will be reviewed by a panel of industry professionals who will be looking for strong portfolio quality, originality, and a compelling written statement. The winner will be notified in the week starting 22 June 2026, with additional opportunities to learn about cover-design processes and publishing workflows during the visit to Pan Macmillan and the invitation to the HQ tour. A travel contribution toward reasonable expenses of up to £100 per day is available for the winner to help cover getting to and from events and meetings.
